Butyric Acid - The Miracle Molecule in The Human Body

 Butyric acid, a four-carbon organic acid produced in the human body by the fermentation of probiotics. For the past ten years, my main research has been on this magical little molecule. The butyric acid mentioned here is n-butyric acid. Isobutyric acid, in the body, does not do anything.

The easiest way to achieve gut health is to consume a high fiber diet containing lots of different plant foods. The reason for this is that fiber, especially prebiotic fiber, feeds our intestinal microbes. The fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids, which are associated with beneficial health outcomes. In short, it is actually short-chain fatty acids that provide many of the benefits associated with gut health. Three main types of short-chain fatty acids exist: butyric acid, propionic acid and acetic acid.

Butyrate benefits include reduced inflammation and risk of certain chronic diseases, including obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, support for digestion and a role in immunity and metabolism.

The MetS Microbiome Study recently published and discussed the beneficial effects of SCFA. The study investigated whether the gut microbiome plays a role in the development and progression of the metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition diagnosed by the presence of multiple factors that significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, including insulin resistance, elevated blood pressure, abdominal obesity, and altered glucolipid metabolism.

The results of the study are fascinating. The authors found that the gut microbiome of MetS patients had significantly lower gut microbiome diversity. Certain bacterial species were negatively correlated with waist circumference, implying that low numbers of certain bacteria were associated with abdominal obesity. microbiome changes in MetS patients contribute to inflammation and MetS disease by suppressing the production of SCFA, which we know is associated with health benefits, including reduced inflammation. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential ability of a healthy gut microbiota as a therapeutic tool in the fight against the metabolic syndrome.

One of the main benefits of butyrate acid is that butyrate actually fuels your gut cells, as it is the main source of energy for colon cells (the cells that make up the lining of the intestine). Most cells in our bodies use glucose (sugar) as fuel, but colon cells use butyrate as their main source of energy. This relationship is beneficial because butyrate provides fuel for the colon cells. In turn, these cells help provide an anaerobic environment for beneficial intestinal microbes to thrive. In addition, higher levels of butyrate have been shown to increase glutathione levels. Glutathione is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in the intestine.

Butyrate and inflammation

 

The lining of the gut maintains low levels of tightly controlled inflammation. However, negative lifestyle factors can describe this tight control and increase inflammation, which can lead to prolonged oxidative damage. The effects of anti-inflammatory butyric acid described reduce oxidative stress and control damage caused by free radicals. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) also indirectly affect the inflammatory effects of the microbiota and intestinal permeability by activating SCFA receptors on immune cells.

 

Butyrate and digestive disorders

 

Short-chain fatty acids may be useful in the treatment of certain digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In particular, butyric acid has anti-inflammatory effects in the intestinal tract.
