Why Are Feed Additives Important?

Feed additives are ingredients that are added to feed in small quantities and play certain important roles. For example, they can improve feed characteristics by providing nutritional value, texture, flavor, emulsification and preservation of the feed. Examples that most people will recognize are vitamins, amino acids (components of protein), preservatives, and antioxidants.

For farm animals, the majority of their diet usually consists of corn, wheat and soybean meal. To avoid possible deficiencies and to ensure absorption of all essential nutrients, feed additives are required. These ingredients play a key role in ensuring proper animal nutrition and therefore the health and well-being of the animals.

However, feed additives offer many other benefits. In fact, among other things, they can reduce the environmental footprint of animal agriculture as well as support animal welfare and improve their resistance to infectious diseases.

Feed additives are very small amounts of ingredients (in the mg/kg range) that are added to feed to perform specific and important functions. In addition, some of these ingredients are essential, which means that animals cannot synthesize them on their own and therefore would be deficient in these essential ingredients if they were not included in their diet. For example, feed additives can also improve feed characteristics by enhancing their nutritional value, or improving their flavor, texture and helping to maintain their quality, freshness and wholesomeness. The ingredients that most people will recognize are vitamins, carotenoids, amino acids (components of protein), salt and minerals.

For farm animals, most of their diet usually consists of corn, wheat and soybean meal. These ingredients alone usually do not meet the dietary requirements of farm animals for essential nutrients, which are necessary for their health and well-being. Therefore, feed additives are needed to avoid possible deficiencies.

However, nutrition is not the only function of feed additives to protect and support the health and welfare of animals. Some ingredients, such as flavoring and coloring agents, can stimulate appetite during delicate periods in animals (as in humans), which can be observed during weaning. Other feed additives, such as probiotics help maintain the balance of intestinal flora (similar to humans), which has been scientifically proven to enhance their immune system. Overall, these functions enhance animal health and reduce the likelihood of death from harmful microorganisms and disease.

Feed additives can also improve the handling and/or sanitary characteristics of feed. The most important thing is to maintain the quality and nutritional value of the feed, which helps to improve the quality of the final animal product. In order to produce healthy food for humans, farm animals need safe, nutritious, healthy and high quality feeds.

Finally, certain feed additives can play an important role in alleviating some social problems, especially in terms of sustainability. For example, enzymes have been shown to reduce emissions from livestock production (e.g., phosphorus, methane), thereby reducing the environmental footprint.
